Ask Dr NeilColds and Flu

Can you get reinfected with a cold?

QUESTION: Can you get reinfected with a cold? I seem to get better, then my son catches the cold. Next thing I know I’ve got a cough and fever again.

ANSWER: There are two likely scenarios. The first is that you could be developing into sinusitis or bronchitis. Alternatively, your son may have caught a new cold, and for one for which you have no immunity. Children catch six to eight colds a year and they last from ten to fourteen days. It can be hard to know when one cold ends and another one begins.
